As defined in the North American Numbering Plan, the 650 area code is a Northern California area code, covering areas of the central, western part of the state. On August 2, 1997, the 650 area code was created after splitting from the 415 area code, which now covers the San Francisco area. The 650 area code did not become permanent until January 31, 1998 after a permissive dialing phase that allowed use of either area code was ended.
The 650 area code covers almost the entirety of San Mateo County, with the exception of its northern most tip. In addition, the 650 area code covers a very small portion of Santa Clara County, in its Northwestern portion.
Cities covered by the 650 area code
include Belmont, Brisbane, Daly City, Palo Alto, Los Altos, Menlo Park,
Hillsborough, Mountain View, Pescadero, Redwood City, San Bruno, San Carlos, San
Mateo, South San Francisco, and the Stanford college campus.
