The 315 area code was created in 1947 to
provide coverage for the central portion of Upstate New York. The area code was
split in 1954 for the first time to create the 607 area code which provides
coverage for the Central Southern portion of the state. Additionally, the 716
and 315 area codes were realigned to better incorporate the growing boundaries
of Rochester in the 1970s. In 2002, the 585 area code was created and boundaries
the 315 on the Western side.
The counties currently served in full or in part by the 315 area code include Yates, Cayuga, Wayne, Chenango, Seneca, Cortland, Saint Lawrence, Fulton, Otsego, Hamilton, Oswego, Herkimer, Ontario, Jefferson, Onondaga, Lewis, Oneida, and Madison Counties.
The 315 area code currently services the
major cities and towns of Syracuse, Utica, Watertown, Auburn, Little Falls,
Geneva, Ontario, Oswego, Potsdam, Rome, Romulus, and Penn Yann.
